How to Manage a Renovation Without Losing Your Mind (And Why I Built a System to Do It)
I'm currently standing in the middle of a full renovation.
Not metaphorically. Literally. As I write this, The Shores - a waterfront home in Noosa Waters is mid-build. There are trades on site, decisions being made daily, and a budget that needs to be tracked in real time.
And I'll be honest - even after fifteen years as an interior designer, managing a renovation is a lot.
Not because it's complicated. But because there are so many moving parts, so many decisions, and so many moments where the wrong call — made at the wrong time — can cost you thousands.

Why most renovations go wrong
After fifteen years of designing renovations for clients - and renovating my own homes -I've seen the same pattern play out over and over again.

The five stages every renovation goes through
Every successful renovation — whether it's a single bathroom or a full home — follows the same sequence. The problem is most homeowners don't know what that sequence is until they've already made expensive mistakes.
Here's the order that works:
Stage 1 — Non-Negotiables Before you design anything, you need to be clear on your budget, your scope and your priorities. What is staying. What is changing. What you won't compromise on. What can flex if costs need to be cut.
Without this foundation, every decision that follows is made on shifting ground.
Stage 2 — Layout & Flow How does the space actually work? Where are the walls, the doors, the windows? How will people move through it? What are the furniture clearances?
Layout decisions affect everything: structure, services, cabinetry and cost. Getting this wrong is one of the most expensive renovation mistakes you can make.
Stage 3 — Structure & Services What's happening behind the walls? Plumbing locations, electrical planning, structural changes, heating and cooling. These decisions determine what's possible and what isn't before a single fixture is chosen.
Stage 4 — Fixtures & Finishes Now and only now, you choose your tiles, tapware, cabinetry, appliances and finishes. With the layout confirmed, services locked in and measurements accurate, your selections are faster, clearer and far less likely to change.
Stage 5 — Pre-Build Confidence Before anything is locked in - quotes, contracts, construction, you do a final sense-check. Is everything documented? Are lead times confirmed? Are inclusions and exclusions clearly understood?
A short pause here can save weeks and thousands later.
Why I built the Renovation Management System
I've given this framework to clients for years. Explained it in first meetings, mapped it out on whiteboards, walked people through it over the phone.
